A Minecraft Movie is a live-action adaptation of the popular video game. Directed by Jared Hess, who is known for Napoleon Dynamite, the movie will be released on April 4, 2025. Warner Bros. will distribute it.
The movie follows four characters from the real world. They are suddenly transported into the Overworld—the world of Minecraft.
In this new world, they must learn to survive. They’ll need to use the game’s rules to stay alive. Along the way, they will face dangerous creatures and complete a quest. They’ll also team up with a resident of the Minecraft world to help them.
Where Was A Minecraft Movie Filmed?
The movie was filmed in several locations. Most of the filming took place in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Calgary, Alberta. Some scenes were shot in Montréal, Québec to show different types of landscapes.
The production also moved to Auckland, New Zealand. There, special sets were built to recreate the Minecraft world.
These sets were designed to match the game’s unique style. The filmmakers worked hard to make the sets look just like the game. They also used special filming techniques to make the world feel immersive and real.

When Was A Minecraft Movie Filmed?
Filming was delayed because of the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. The production was supposed to begin in August 2023. However, filming didn’t start until after the strike ended in November 2023.
Filming officially began in December 2023. It picked up speed by mid-January 2024. The production wrapped up in April 2024.
Jason Momoa, one of the movie’s stars, posted on Instagram after filming finished. He shared his excitement about the experience, saying:
“Minecraft, we are wrapping! All my aloha to my crew and cast. It was truly one of the greatest times of my life. Too many laughs. I love this country. Aotearoa New Zealand, you are magical. Mahalo for letting me film here.”
