Get Away is a 2024 British horror-comedy movie directed by Steffen Haars and written by Nick Frost. The film stars Nick Frost, Aisling Bea, Sebastian Croft, and Maisie Ayres.
It premiered at Fantastic Fest on September 20, 2024, and will be released in theaters in the United States on December 6, 2024. In the UK, it will be available on Sky Cinema starting January 10, 2025.
Initially, Nick Frost and Lena Headey were announced as the main stars, making this their second movie together after Fighting with My Family (2019). The directing team at the time included Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil.
However, due to scheduling conflicts, Aisling Bea replaced Lena Headey in the film. Steffen Haars eventually directed the movie alone.
Where Was Get Away Filmed?
Set in Svälta, a fictional Swedish island, Get Away was filmed in Tampere, Finland, and was completed in November 2023. Filming took place in forest areas and included some cottages, local cafes, and locations around the lake.
However, it is currently unknown which specific cottage was used for filming. Tampere is a lively city in Southern Finland with a mix of city life and nature. It is called the “Manchester of Finland” because of its industrial past but has grown into a modern, exciting place.
The city sits between two beautiful lakes, Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi, offering great views and fun activities like boating, fishing, and swimming.
Get Away is a mix of comedy and folk horror, written by Nick Frost in his first solo screenplay. The story focuses on the Smith family, who clash with the strange locals on a mysterious island.
The first part of the movie is filled with funny moments, though some jokes feel a bit overused. Highlights include quirky humor, like discussions about waffles, and playful nods to The Wicker Man.
The best parts come from the family’s chaotic dynamic, with the cast, especially newcomer Maisie Ayres, delivering great performances and sharp comedy. However, the islanders don’t feel as developed, with only one character standing out.
The movie slows down before the finale but picks up again with a wild, violent climax full of surprises and laughs. While it may not aim for depth, Get Away offers a fun and crazy ride that ends on a high note.
