Manchester was a key filming location. The city’s historic buildings and lively atmosphere helped bring the past to life. Some of the areas filmed include:
Historical Buildings: Older buildings in Manchester were turned into hospitals and labs for the film, representing the early days of IVF research.
City Center Streets: These were used to show busy hospital areas and research labs.
Although the film used other locations in Greater Manchester for certain scenes, Manchester was the main backdrop for the movie.

When Did the Filming of Joy Take Place?
Filming for Joy started in September 2023 and continued for several months. The team worked hard to show both the scientific discoveries and the personal stories of the people involved in IVF.
The cast and crew worked carefully to make the movie as realistic as possible. The team also transformed parts of Manchester to look like the time period.
Director Ben Taylor and writer Jack Thorne worked closely to make sure the story was told in a way that would connect with viewers. The actors, including Thomasin McKenzie, Bill Nighy, and James Norton, spent time rehearsing and getting into character.

Early in the film, I think the scene where Jean mentions / ‘offers’ sex to Arun is at Selwyn College, Cambridge. I think they’re the ‘new’ halls of residence but there may be many like that in Cambridge.
