Nightbitch is a 2024 American black comedy body horror film directed by Marielle Heller and based on Rachel Yoder’s 2021 novel of the same name.
The film stars Amy Adams as Mildred Hayes, a stay-at-home mother who begins to experience a surreal transformation into a dog.
As her maternal instincts intensify, she starts developing canine characteristics, leading to a darkly humorous and unsettling exploration of motherhood, identity, and societal expectations.
The film is scheduled for a theatrical release in the United States by Searchlight Pictures on December 6, 2024.
Where Was Nightbitch Filmed?
Nightbitch was filmed completely in Los Angeles, California. The movie shows places like local parks, streets, and grocery stores. These locations make the story feel real and help naturally show the main character’s everyday life.
Filming was supposed to begin in September 2022 in Los Angeles but officially started in October. Around this time, Ella Thomas joined the cast, and later, Mary Holland and Zoë Chao were also confirmed as cast members.
In 2020, Annapurna Pictures bought the rights to make a movie based on the book Nightbitch, written by Rachel Yoder. At the time, the book had not been published yet.
Amy Adams was announced to star in and produce the film. Stacy O’Neil from Adams’ company, Bond Group Entertainment, joined as a co-producer along with Megan Ellison, Sue Naegle, and Sammy Scher.
Rachel Yoder would also work as an executive producer. Director Marielle Heller, known for Can You Ever Forgive Me?, loved the story and started working on the movie quietly with Adams during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In March 2022, the team planned to start filming in the fall of that year. In May, Searchlight Pictures bought the distribution rights for $25 million, beating five other companies.
Marielle Heller was officially confirmed as the director. Christina Oh, Adam Paulsen, and Heller joined as producers, while Sammy Scher and Havilah Brewster became executive producers.
